Does your Telecom Department understand Voice over IP Services?

Are you certain all your VOIP Services are billed correctly?

Understanding Voice over IP Services:

ATA - analog telephone adapter. This device is used to replace your current telephone company. The ATA device is an easy way to connect to Voice over IP.. The ATA is an analog-to-digital converter. It takes the analog signal from your phone and converts the signal from analog to digital format for transmission over the Internet. The number of Voice over IP Providers has grown and Vonage and AT&T CallVantage are giving ATAs free with their service. The most common ATA is the FXS which is an analog adapter that connects to your phone - it has at least one telephone jack or FXS port. This is used to connect your phone plus Ethernet jack to the LAN or router you are using. You can also use this device to connect a phone to a remote Voice over IP server. Some analog telephone adapters may require software which can be loaded into the server or main computer with a connection to the internet.

IP Telephone - These Voice over IP phones look the same as a normal phone in appearance but they use a different connecter. Instead of the standard RJ11 phone connection, an RJ45 Ethernet connecter is used. The Internet Protocol phones connect directly to your router or LAN and they come with all the software and parts needed for you Internet Protocol connection.

Computer-to-computer - This is the easiest way to use Voice over IP. Two computers can talk to one another with the proper equipment.

What is SIP?
Originally SIP was intended to create a instrument for inviting people to large-scale conference discussion on the Internet Multicast Backbone (Mbone).

Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)- This peer to peer protocol is the system used to terminate, modify and initiate multimedia (videa, voice, messaging, etc.).  This is the leading signaling protocol for VOIP another used is H.323.

SIP services work together with other protocols and it is only concerned with the signaling segment of a communication session.  SIP is also a carrier for SDP (Session Description Protocol) this is the media portion of the signal (the codec used, and what IP ports are being used).  Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP). RTP is the carrier for the video or authentic voice content itself.

SIP implements some of the more advanced call processing features present in SS7 (Signaling System 7). These SIP communications are implemented in the endpoints instead of how SS7 is implemented inside the network.
